Hanoi with the Fujifilm X100V

This has been the longest time I’ve gone without posting since (re)starting my content creation journey through YouTube and this blog. A few weeks ago my girlfriend and I took a short trip to Hanoi and was blown away by the sights, sounds, food and unbearable 40-degree heat. The pictures at the end of this post highlight snaps while walking around the streets of Hanoi, all with the Fuji X100V.

The inspiration to this

The visual content of this blog post highlights my travels to Hanoi in Vietnam. Prior to the trip I wanted to find a way to make a photo book that I could actually print out and keep as a coffee table magazine. I was inspired by a bunch of YouTubers who have done this in the past. One particular photographer that I’m really inspired by goes by the name Andrè Josselin. I haven’t bought any of his limited edition photo books, but just the idea of having something tangible to keep and show to friends and family - or even publish online digitally and physically for a bit of pocket money - is something that excites me. It pushes me to become better at my hobby, which makes the passion more fulfilling.

Ah, fulfilment. It’s been a while since I’ve felt much purpose or passion, to be honest. I’ve always been back-and-forth on so many things in this space, and I’m not proud of it. The few that know me personally have probably seen all my lacklustre attempts at content creation. There’s always this urge in my gut that tells me that I want to do this. I want to create, despite all the mental resistance and excuses I make. Perhaps it could be because I never had a need to do this. Sometimes you just need to have your back against the wall or get a big whoop in the ass to really wake up and get going with life.

Sometimes you just need to have your back against the wall or get a big whoop in the ass to really wake up and get going with life.

Who knows, maybe I’ll end up giving this all up, for good. It’ll be difficult to actualise as I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars over the last 15 years on cameras, lenses and gear.

On a brighter note, I’ve been enjoying my current setup which I think works best for travel content.

I currently own a simple, lightweight photo and video pairing:

Sony A7SIII for video

Fujifilm X100V for photo

and a bunch of lenses for the Sony, a few that I actually don’t need, haha.

I won’t go too much into describing what went on in Hanoi. I think it’s pretty self explanatory from the video above and the photos below, which I probably spent 30+ hours or so editing and compiling. I want to point out that I made use of a plugin for Da Vinci Resolve called Dehancer for this video, which allowed me to add in effects like bloom, halation and interesting film-like colour profiles.

If you’re keen on giving it a try, head over to Dehancer’s website and use the code TIMSOCHILL for a discount when you purchase. I do get a small kickback when you use my code, so if you decide to buy anything I’d highly appreciate it as it would help recuperate some of my losses from GAS over the years. Lol, just trying my luck in doing some business. No pressure!
